Peugeot rack and tool boxes

I was looking for a rear rack for the Assenmacher, something that would compliment the Luxor rack & lights combo on the front of the bike, and found this set from a Peugeot city bike on eBay France.

The rack is steel - I plan to make a copy in aluminum, but for now I'll clean this one and paint it red to match the stripes on the fenders. The aluminum boxes will polish-up nicely, but they have some dents - hopefully I can straighten them enough to be passable.

very nice! Pretty sure Jim Cunninham had a set of these on his alex singer. Wonderful touch.

I like the mud on the mudguards too, as I'm a month away from serious riding. Why are you going too remake the rack? Is too heavy to be reasonable?

Good question, Gunnar, and even as I wrote it, I wondered if it would be worth making a rack from aluminum. I was hoping it might save weight, and with attachments on the fender and the dropouts it should be stiff enough. Not that the steel rack is a heavyweight - 1.5 lbs according to my scale. I wonder how that compares to the BagMan bag support I use for the saddle bag?

I love these these tool boxes. You could keep your sardines and hot sauce in there.

You could also, save an ounce on that rack weight just by cleaning it up.

The lightest rack I have is a Tubus Fly @ 11 oz. You could dink around with aluminum and end up with a rack that weighs more than a pound and a half.
